Gearing Up

December 10th, 2010

In keeping with Jason’s current series of all things bicycle and the bicycling way – he arranged to do a portrait of Erik from Gear Shop Brisbane in West End.  As I wasn’t invited (and I’m just saying…) I hear it was quite a production with Jason being assisted by two of our photographer friends, Todd and Mike.  (Although is it debatable whether you could call it assistance cause if you ask me, I think the boys just wanted to hang out together, play with cameras and bikes, and shoot the breeze!)  A MASSIVE thank you to Erik for waiting patiently for two hours while they fiddled (and I would have to say endlessly) with lights, cameras and smoke machines.  I know lots has been written about Erik and his contribution to the fixed gear revolution which has swept our fair city so I won’t go into the details but if you want to hear from the man himself check out his blog.  Thanks Erik!  Also if you want to know anything about the shot such as what gear, what lights, camera settings, what does it mean???!!! – just leave me a comment and I’ll ask Jason and get back to you.

The Things We Do For Love

November 26th, 2010

I have spent many an afternoon watching BMX videos.  Now although they are not something I would seek out necessarily (hence “The Things We Do For Love” title to this post) you’ve got to admit that these riders are pretty amazing.  They will just throw themselves again and again at walls, down rails, over fences all the while managing to make it all look effortless and super, super cool.  And as much as I may roll my eyes when another video is slammed into the machine, I have great respect for them because I know, in my heart of hearts, that I would rather stick a fork in my eye than do that to myself.  That being said Jason has a bit of a history with BMX (Redline Series 3 with Red Skyway Tuffs anyone?) and when given any opportunity he will grab his gear and race over to some abandoned lot or school or drain to take pictures.  And these pictures are pretty cool don’t you think?  NOTHING like those dorks on BMX Bandits hey?  Puts those nancy boys to shame!  And what about all that safety gear – I mean jeez, how weak can you get!!  Nowadays they don’t even wear a helmet.

And kids, if you are going to try this at home, don’t forget to give Jason a call!

welcome
