BOUQUET Boutique

July 11th, 2011

I love flowers.  In fact, if I was to get married again, I would have a beautiful archway of flowers as an alter and cover every surface with peonies, roses, tulips, anemones, freesias – you name it!  I think they add such amazing depth to the theme of your wedding day – not only through colour and meaning but smell and form.  I love that brides choose flowers based on tradition (what their mother’s bouquet was like), sentiment (the first bunch of flowers their fiance gave them – even if they were carnations), meaning (red roses symbolise love, yellow roses, friendship) and style (blowsy or structured, small or large).  We recently had the pleasure to work with Geraldine of BOUQUET Boutique and given the flowers were spectacular, I thought I would ask her some questions about her work.  BOUQUET Boutique is located in the heart of New Farm and specialises in wedding and event flowers.  Geraldine is truly passionate about working with you to design a theme for your wedding day and to realise it through bouquets, buttonholes, corsages, church arrangements and table decorations.

How did you get into floristry?

From early memories as a young girl I remember playing in the garden and admiring the intricacies in flowers and foliage.  That coupled with my studying art and design at school, I knew I was drawn to creative industries.  I also had a passion for alternative farming and in my late teens and twenties, I invested in growing rare native flowers on my parents’ farm that were exported around the world.  From here I naturally progressed to study the art of floristry and now have ended up in my little boutique in New Farm

What does your job entail?

Getting up early going to the markets on a daily basis, day-to-day running of the shop, designing bouquets for all occasions, getting to be creative and expressive by putting together floral arrangements for all of my clients.

What aspects are involved in floristry – is it just the bouquet or is it so much more like theming and styling?

Flowers for weddings are so much more than just the bouquets, they can create an amazing ambience to any event and are a crucial part of the styling.  They are a real focal point!

How do you work with brides?

When a bride comes into the shop I love to make the consultation an experience – most people don’t know too much about the names and types of flowers available to them so I also like to pass on a little knowledge from my experience. Most brides bring in images of flowers they love and I will use these for inspiration and usually tweak it a little to put my design stamp on it and give my bride something made just for her!

What information do you want to know before planning the flowers for a wedding?

It is best to have an idea of the look you want to achieve – colours, venues, seasons and other inspiration pieces are all used to conceptualise the floral design. For example I had a bride that planned her whole wedding around a gorgeous wooden and amber bangle that she loved and wanted to wear on the big day

What is the favourite part of your job?

Playing with flowers and colour and being a part of each bride’s wedding memories!

What is the worst part of your job?

Having ‘florist’ hands & giant thorns!

For brides what will be the big bridal trends for 2011 – 2012?

COLOURS! Bold bright and daring colour! Unstructured looking designs are still really popular (they take a lot of work to make them look that way! – I call it the Etsy look!) I have seen some fantastic new designs made with the humble gerbera that I just love!

Tickled Pink Events

June 13th, 2011

Bridal expos are a funny thing.  We do about four big ones a year plus a handful or more boutique ones and, to be honest, I love them.  (Don’t tell Jason because I use this as a weapon every year because he magically manages to be shooting weddings on the expo dates – wins me A LOT of brownie points – and I mean A LOT!!!)  Now I love the expos not because I have to schlep all my gear to and from the car bumping in and bumping out, physically building our stand with a drill and screws (a very funny sight) and then be on my feet for three, whole, days. (There ain’t nothing fun about that part I can tell you!)  What I do love is meeting all the brides (and mother-of-the-brides and bridesmaids, mother-of-the-grooms and, of course, the somewhat shellshocked, grooms) and I also love meeting all the different people running all the amazing companies that offer all these services for your wedding.  So it was at the last bridal expo (or perhaps the one before that???) that I met Angie Rogers and found out about her great company, Tickled Pink Events.  We had a great time chatting and talking about our work so we were really thrilled when Angie brought her lovely clients Tim and Jacqui to us for their wedding photography.  Since then we have been trying to make a time to chat up and talk some more but, you know, busy schedules never collide.  So here is my virtual chat with Angie – but I hope to make it a real one very soon.

How did you get involved in styling events?

My dalliance into event styling came as a natural progression from wedding planning, through clients who had ideas and pages of magazine clippings for a ‘look’ of their wedding but weren’t quite sure where to source products and how to bring their ideas together to create their own unique style.

What services do you offer?

Tickled Pink Events offers assistance with any type of wedding and event planning and styling, as well as beautiful handmade stationery and style accents.

What do you love most about what you do?

I love seeing the transformation of the bride and groom on their wedding day from normal everyday people into these glamorous beings that looked like they’ve stepped out of the pages of Wedding Style Guide. I also love watching their faces light up when they see their ceremony or reception venue transformed with all their ideas, it is a really rewarding experience.

Best wedding you have styled and why?

Of course I would have to say my most recent clients Jacqui and Tim who trusted me whole-heartedly with their wedding planning and styling. They were always so open to ideas and suggestions and really gave me free reign to plan their wedding which was very humbling. Also my clients Kate and Andrew who got married in the backyard of Kate’s parents house. It was a beautiful and relaxed wedding, we made dozens of pink and white paper lanterns, using in vintage papers/ribbons and hung them from the trees in the ceremony area. It was a simple idea but looked so pretty and perfect for the location.

Given there are so many ways to go to style your wedding, how do you help your client make a decision about which way they should go on their wedding day?

I think the key is to listen to your clients, what they say in the early planning stages in terms of ideas and styling is often what they keep coming back to. With Jacqui and Tim’s wedding, words like elegant, classic, hot pink and most importantly fun were uttered many times. So I used these as inspiration to create something that was personal and unique to them.

What do you think will be the big styling trends for 2011 – 2012?

Keeping it simple and elegant, reinventing the classics but with your own style stamp, absolutely anything vintage, video ‘save the dates’, monogram of bride and grooms initials, cheese buffet rather than a lolly buffet and eco chic.

What are your 3 top tips for styling and event?

Really spend the time in the early stages planning ideas and themes (obviously it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind) but minimising changes by having a clear styling plan will save you time and money down the track. Be realistic about your budget and what you can afford but make sensible choices on suppliers and always remember that you pay for what you get, quality does not come cheap. Remember to have fun with it, this is a day you will remember for the rest of your life so make sure you remember it for all the right reasons.

welcome
