You Always Take The Weather With You

July 13th, 2010

This winter has been really strange.  I was just talking to my girlfriends about it today.  Unseasonably warm and wet – it has made dressing for this weather that much harder.  It has been quite depressing because I love winter – I love the layering and wearing scarves, gloves and beanies. We get these wonderful crisp days with just the right amount of cold versus the right amount of sun.  Magic!  So why can’t winter just be winter and not some kind of schizophrenic melding of autumn and spring.  That being said, they are forecasting a very chilly Friday.  I guess one day of winter is better than none at all.

I also thought I’d start posting the occasional outfit for your amusement.  I have been working on my look a bit and taking a great deal of inspiration from The Sartorialist, Jak and Jil and Garance Dore.  I had a number of wilderness years when I left my Government job and started working with Jason.  I kept buying these suits and high heels and they would languish in my closet because I had no where to wear them.  (Jason thought I should wear them anyway but I would have felt a bit ridiculous.  Men just really have no idea sometimes!) I then moved into a slacker phase where I would just wear my exercise gear all day but it ate away at my self esteem. It has been hard finding my “fashion voice” now that I am well over thirty.  You keep asking yourself – do I look too young in this?  do I look too old?  I have found that there is a fine, fine line between looking cool and looking desperate.  Anyway I thought this outfit was a good combination of dignified and hip.  You really can’t go wrong with a french inspired striped shirt and plain white converse though can you?  Or…can you?

Day to Night

July 8th, 2010

It seems to be a recent trend that Brides want to accessorise their gowns for the reception – you know, add something a little bit different to take them from the serious ceremony to the more relaxed reception.  It is also a way of bringing in a little unexpected colour to their dress to herald that now is the time to have some fun!  My girlfriend Wilhelmina added a lovely sash to her wedding dress, a recent bride Clare wore a new headpiece in place of her veil and another bride Shikira changed her shoes for the reception.  In keeping with this trend I found this great site Emerson Made which makes wonderful sashes, corsages and shoe accessories and would be an easy and inexpensive way to take your outfit from day to night.

These fabric dahlias can be attached to your shoes – and are made in a variety of colours to match your bridesmaids dresses. (I’m thinking about getting a pair too!)

What about a beautiful flower wrist corsage – it gives your arms a rest from carrying your bouquet and allows for waving your hands in the air and breakdancing – if it is that kind of reception…

My personal favourite is the rose sash – not only is it gorgeous but you will be able to wear it again and again. Either around your waist, in your hair, or on a clutch or jacket.

welcome
